Our History

Holmhill was commissioned by Mrs Eliza Grant in the early 1890’s and completed in 1895.  Eliza was unfortunately widowed by this time but lived in Holmhill with her three daughters until 1914.  The property had many exquisite period features which survive to this day and is one of only three properties in Grantown on Spey distinguishable by the baronial crow-stepped roofs to the front elevation.

Holmhill became a hotel in the 1930s and remained so, on and off, until it was purchased by the Multiple Sclerosis Society (MSS) and officially opened as a holiday centre by HRH Prince Charles on the 13th October 1983. We know that major changes were made to the property at this time and a further extension was added in 1999. We have the MSS to thank for the construction of the lift that now operates in the central core of the building which allows disabled guests access to each of the bedrooms and bathroom on the first floor.

Unfortunately, the Multiple Sclerosis Society closed the centre in 2002 and it lay empty and neglected until the July 2003 when it was purchased by the Fitzhugh family who saw the potential Holmhill had as a luxury holiday venue with its stunning views and rooms with original cornicing and period features.  Mike and Mel (Fitzhugh) carried out a major “labour of love” refurbishment during 2004 bringing the property up to date but retaining all those wonderful Victorian elements.

In October 2011 Holmhill was purchased by the current owners with a view to becoming their family home at some stage in the not too distant future.  They plan to relocate from North Yorkshire to their ‘spiritual home’ here in the heart of the Highlands as soon as practicable.  Whilst they plan to spend as much time as possible in Grantown on Spey, they have decided to allow other families and groups to share the Holmhill experience, even if only for a few weeks at a time.

Therefore, a major investment was made to refurbish and re-fit the property during the winter of 2011.  From Easter 2012 lets were taken on a weekly basis; the first time in over a century that Holmhill was available on a fully exclusive basis to visiting families and groups.

Since 2012, the property has benefited from a rolling program of restoration, improvement and refurbishment.  Likewise, Holmhill has established itself as a very special place to stay while visiting the Highlands and this means that the house is regularly rebooked on leaving.  Many families now spend their annual holiday at Holmhill, testament to the quality of the accommodation and the improvements Chris and Lisa have made since their last visit.
